  • Make sure your mobile phone is always switched on and that the ring tone is loud enough to hear, even when you are asleep. Your phone battery should be fully charged at all times. You are advised to have a charged spare phone battery available.
  • You can save yourself and the lives of your families and friends, even as little as fifteen minutes before a tsunami arrives. If you receive an SMS Warning from TsunamiSMS take it seriously. Even if it is a false alarm or if a tsunami doesn’t eventuate, it’s worth taking precautions.
  • As soon as you receive an SMS Warning which indicates that you are in an area at risk of a tsunami, immediately move to higher ground at least five kilometers inland and away from streams or rivers. Take your mobile phone with you and a battery operated radio. A car radio would suffice.
  • Evacuation to a high floor in a high-rise apartment building is not recommended as the construction may become unstable in the case of a severe tsunami.
